The Coastal Auntie Aesthetic: Nancy Meyers meets Carrie Bradshaw

And just like that…it’s autumn

When they said this is the year of the Fire Horse, they weren’t kidding. I feel like we collectively blinked and launched ourselves to the beginning of autumn digging through our closets for fall outfit inspiration.

Which, if you’re like me, you’re welcoming it with open arms.

I love summer. Truly I do. I feel care free, lightly sunburnt, and relaxed. It’s a time to slow down and enjoy long nights on the patio watching the sunset, staying up too late with friends, and exploring new places (like my trip to New Bedford in August).

But in the fall?

I come alive.

I think it’s because I’m an October baby (anyone else a Scorpio?), but really it has to do with the rich colors we get with the leaves changing and crisp morning air. I was an athlete growing up (I played lacrosse and tennis), so I think I’m also used to the changing of the seasons signaling the start of something exciting.

Plus, hosting season really gets going in the fall. We (me and my husband Ryan) tend to host most of our gatherings in the October-December timeframe because it’s nice to be cozy inside and catching up about how everyone spent their year.

We usually host something for my birthday (my 31st birthday theme was A Tini Bit Older, so everything was martini themed), something fun for Halloween (not a true Halloween party, but an excuse to enjoy pumpkin goodies, though I’d love to host a Halloween party in the future), a Friendsgiving gathering in November, and in December a cookie swap (a tradition started by my mother-in-law) with our friends.

And you know I’m going to find something with a coastal vibe to wear to each of these. I’m even working on a coastal Halloween costume guide.

So what is coastal style?

Coastal style is inherently inspired by the ocean meeting the shore. Think of the hues and textures you find there: deep blues and greens of the water, soft tans and rich browns of the dry and wet sand, sun bleached white and gray of shells and driftwood.

It’s also dressing like the feeling you get being in these places. Relaxed, blissful. Sometimes invigorating.

Many people think about coastal style as inherently a summer theme, with breezy linens and strappy sandals, as many spend their summer days by the ocean. But if you’ve lived by the water for as long as I have, you know that this style continues through all seasons.

More recently people think about the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic, noted by soft silhouettes and neutral color palettes (see left image below). Or even the Coastal Granddaughter aesthetic, which offers a slightly more youthful feel with more patterns and bolder colors (see right image below).

Personally, I find myself reaching more for the Coastal Auntie aesthetic. I consider it somewhere between a Nancy Meyers main character and Carrie Bradshaw’s closet. The color palette is inspired by the coast, but playfully incorporates richer hues, pops of color, and a few elements of city living.

What’s the Coastal Auntie Aesthetic?

I first saw Coastal Auntie used by Italia Sophie on TikTok it stopped me in my tracks because I felt like I finally saw a ‘coastal aesthetic’ trend that resonated. The Coastal Auntie is a bit more sophisticated than the Coastal Granddaughter, but less proper than the Coastal Grandmother.

She’s ready for a 7am walk on the beach with her salted maple latte, plays jazz music while she works around the house, enjoys hosting week night dinner parties, loves a weekend in a waterfront city, and a glass of wine to wine down on Sundays. She enjoys being home, but is often on the move (she has nieces and nephews to keep up with, after all).

It’s why I didn’t personally resonate with Coastal Grandmother or Coastal Granddaughter aesthetics.

Frankly, Coastal Grandmother felt too mature and Coastal Granddaughter felt too youthful.

I haven’t picked up needlepoint or knitting or Mahjong yet, but I do know how to make a crisp martini and host a party that has people still talking about the cookies 7 months later (true story, they were the Neiman Marcus $250 cookies).

But beyond the question of what she does, the real question is: what does the Coastal Auntie wear?

Coastal Fall Color Palette

The beautiful thing about the coastal aesthetic is that so many of the colors work across all seasons, so you can easily choose to build a capsule wardrobe. They key colors you’ll find popping out for fall are navy blue, cream, chocolate brown, and oyster gray, with pops of camel, burgundy, olive green.

Now most people lean into the color black or charcoal as their neutral over the colder months. I personally think shifting to navy blue as your main neutral base, in lieu of black, is what keeps your wardrobe feeling coastal. And of course, accenting with chocolate brown or camel rather than black.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always own a pair of black booties, they’re a classic for a reason. But given that I’m looking to lean more into this specific aesthetic, there’s a few wardrobe staples I’ve upgraded in the last year.
